PALLIATIVE CARE TO THE ELDERLY PATIENT: AN INTEGRATIVE REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE
Abstract
Objectives: To characterize the scientific production about palliative care for the elderly, on national online journals in the health field, in the period from 2005 to 2011. In addition, we aimed to summarize the contribution of scientific production on palliative care for assistance practice to the elderly patient. Materials and Method: This is an integrative review of the literature conducted on the databases Latin American and Caribbean Literature of Information in Health Sciences (LACLIHS), Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) and Brazilian Nursing Database - BND. In order to facilitate data collection, the following keywords were used: “Palliative Care and the Elderly” and “Palliative Care and Geriatrics”. Accordingly, the sample was composed by 13 publications. Results: The analysis of the material allowed to identify two themes: “Palliative Care as a modality of care in the assistance to the elderly patient”; and “Role of caregivers and/or family in the assistance of palliative care to the elderly patient”. Conclusion: It is important to mention that, despite the small number of studies on palliative care for the elderly patient, the topic addressed in this review has required attention from health researches in the past few years. DESCRIPTORS: Palliative Care. Elderly.HealtDownloads
