HOSPITAL STRUCTURE FOR THE CARE OF THE ELDERLY: A PERSPECTIVE ON THE REALITY IN JOAO PESSOA, PB, BRAZIL
Abstract
Introduction: The aging process of the population in João Pessoa, capital of Paraíba State, has challenged the Government and its public health policies to answer to the needs for improvement of hospitals. In a near future, there will be more elderlies than healthcare facilities meeting the standards established in the Ordinance n. 249/SAS/MS (2002), which regulates the norms for accreditation of Centros de Referência em Atenção à Saúde do Idoso (Reference Healthcare Centers for the Elderly). Objective: This was a descriptive, exploratory study analyzing the current situation in the city concerning this topic. Quanti-qualitative methods were used to deepen the study of the phenomena on focus. Material and Methods: Data concerning the hospital structures was collected using a closed-question questionnaire. The data were analyzed and these institutions were checked for their compliance or non-compliance with what is proposed in the Ordinance nº249/SAS/MS (2002) so that to be classified as Reference Healthcare Centers for the Elderly. Results and Conclusion: The results demonstrated that the city of João Pessoa had no hospitals in compliance with the Ordinance of the Ministry of Health in 2012, and there is no perspective of changes in this scenario.
