Profile of users affected by stroke followed by the Family Health Strategy in a capital of northeastern Brazil

Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to determine the socio-demographic and clinical profile of users with sequels of stroke (CVA) followed by the Family Health Strategy. Material and Methods: This was a descriptive, cross-sectional research, carried out in the city of João Pessoa, PB, with 140 patients linked to the Family Health Strategy (FHS), who had history of stroke in up to five years before the research. Results: The vast majority of individuals in this study were 60 years old or more, female, literate, married, and had monthly household income of 1-2 minimum wages. Most respondents could not inform the etiology of stroke, and the hemi-body affected was quite distributed. The vast majority of individuals in this study had a caregiver and one episode of stroke, even though there were many cases of recurrence. Among the main diseases associated with clinical diagnosis, it could be observed high blood pressure and diabetes, as well as smoking habits and alcohol consumption. Conclusion: This study gives visibility to the profile of this population and its main characteristics, as a way to support professionals and community in relation to care; how to face sequels; as well as prevention and comprehensive care to these users and their families according to their real needs.
