Abstract

Objective: To demonstrate the importance of Lauro Wanderley University Hospital (LWUH) for other reporting units in the city of João Pessoa and characterize the notifications based on city of origin. Material and Methods: This was a descriptive study, in the period 2008-2012, based on SINAN (National Reporting Information System) data. First, we analyzed the total number of reports from all units in João Pessoa and calculated the percentage represented by HULW and by the other reporting units. Second, the notifications made in LWUH were characterized according to place of origin, and the ten most prevalent injuries/diseases were highlighted with their respective gender distribution. Results: The notification rates per unit were: 29.57% (2008), 30.31% (2009), and 31.70% (2010). The most common injuries were accidents by poisonous animals (54.55%), Dengue (21.68%), Viral Hepatitis (10.27%) and meningitis (6.58%). Most patients were from João Pessoa (71%), 29% from other municipalities. The gender distribution of the ten most frequent injuries were: accidents by poisonous animals (M: 52.23%, F: 62.98%), Dengue (M: 22.90%, F: 23.30%), viral hepatitis (M: 13.70%; F: 8.75%), meningitis (M: 9.01%; F: 5.42%), TB (M: 1.32%; F 0.92%), Leprosy (M: 1.06%; F: 0.79%), HIV+ pregnant women (F: 1.54%); Leishmaniasis (M: 1.42%; M: 0.36%), Leptospirosis (M: 1.26%, F: 0.49%), Child exposed to HIV (M: 0.59%; M: 0.62%). Conclusion: LWUH brings an important contribution in the notifications of João Pessoa. Thus, it is necessary to invest in skilled labor in hospital centers, aiming at a good quality of notifications to plan health actions with greater resolution. DESCRIPTORS Disease notification.
