Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the side effects perceived by users of anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS) working out in gyms located in the city of Betim, MG, Brazil. Material and Methods: A self-report questionnaire was answered anonymously by male volunteers. Results: A total of 337 subjects answered the questionnaire, of which 62% reported using or having already used AAS. The most frequently reported side effects (over 10%) were as follows: appearance of acne (15.6%); increased libido (13.8%); appearance of stretch marks (12%); increased aggressiveness (12%); mood changes such as bad mood (12%) and euphoria (10.2%). Other side effects reported were: gynecomastia (9.6%), testicular atrophy (8.1%), decreased libido (6.9%), tachycardia (5.1%), headache (4.8%), and increase blood pressure (4.5%). We found that 81.1% of participants acquired the AAS through their friends. The use of AAS was not indicated in any of the cases by medical experts and is generally indicated and directed by friends, which may potentiate the side effects associated with this practice. Conclusion: AAS have been used mostly by bodybuilders without any prescription or monitoring by a specialized professional. Although several side effects are perceived by the users, they do not stop using the drugs. Therefore, only the description of the side effects related to AAS may not be effective in public health programs to combat the illegal use of these drugs. DESCRIPTORS Drug-Related Side Effects and Adverse Reactions. Steroids. Resistance Training.
