PUBLIC HEALTH MANAGEMENT: A FOCUS ON THE ROLE OF NURSES
Abstract
Objective: To describe the role of nurses in public health management, mainly in the services directed to the family health program. Material and methods: This is a literature review carried out between December 2013 and May 2014 in the electronic databases: American and Caribbean Literature on Health Sciences (LILACS), Scientific Electronic Library online (SciELO) and the database of nursing (BDEnf). The following descriptors were used in the searches: public management, health system, public health and nursing; available between 2007 and 2013. The sample was composed of thirteen publications. Results: The analysis of the publications revealed that nurses working in public health have a broader perspective of reality, contributing to the development of problem-solving strategies. Conclusion: The role of nurses working in public health management has been extended, as they focus on multiple functions (administrative, educational and social assistance) under a preventive perspective. The role of nurses in public health is recognized for their competence and ability to understand the human beings in a comprehensive manner, for the integrity of health care, and for their capacity to detect and answer the needs of the community.
