Abstract

Introduction: Body dissatisfaction is very common these days due to the demands of an ideal standard imposed by society. This dissatisfaction can lead people to take harmful actions to health. Researches indicate that obese people often have body dissatisfaction, as well as inflammatory diseases induced by obesity, such as diabetes, hypertension and coronary artery disease. Hence, it is important to implement preventive approaches on excessive weight gain and alternative treatments by means of physical activity and changes in lifestyle. Objective: To evaluate the perception of body image, body composition and physical activity in overweight and obese participants in a weight loss project. Material and Methods: Two measure instruments were used, namely: the scale of silhouettes for evaluation of body image and the IPAQ (International Physical Activity Questionnaire) to assess the level of physical activity. The variables weight, height and waist and hip circumference were also measured for analysis of WHR (waist-hip ratio). The study included 20 participants of the University Extension Project entitled: " Healthy Thinning", at the Seven Day Adventist Faculty of Hortolandia. Results: Among the participants, twelve presented 2 to 4 points in distance at silhouettes scale and eight scored between 5 and 8 points indicating greater dissatisfaction in the range of silhouettes. They demonstrated low (71%) or moderated (29%) level of physical activity, overweight and high risk for coronary heart disease. Conclusion: Body dissatisfaction was more pronounced in the weight loss group, which was expected, given that those looking for a project of this nature are frequently looking for a more delineated body in addition to better health.
