PROFILE OF CAREGIVERS OF DISABLED PERSONS

Abstract

Introducion: Disabled people (DP) are defined as those with limiting capacity or incapacity to perform activities due to physical, visual, auditory, mental and multiple disorders. In many cases, DP need special care. A caregiver is understood as the one who experiences the act of caring and is responsible for developing aid actions, protection, prevention and health recovery. Objective: This was a cross-sectional study aiming to understand the profile of caregivers of DP assigned to health districts in the city of João Pessoa, PB. Material and methods: The study sample was stratified by conglomerates, including a total of 246 respondents from an estimated universe of 682 DP caregivers. The data were collected through a form and analyzed quantitatively using descriptive statistics. Results: Most caregivers were females, with elementary education, and aged 49 years on average. The majority of respondents were caregivers of a disabled person receiving no further help from their relatives. Despite lacking specific training, the respondents felt safe to exercise the act of care. DP with intellectual deficiency were the most frequently cared individuals. Most caregivers presented disorders and negative feelings after taking responsibility for the disabled person. Furthermore, they reported that’s haringcare responsibility with other family members could improve their quality of life, as they received no care either. Conclusion: The majority of respondents were family caregivers in need of training and care. Public health policies targeting caregivers should be strengthened and implemented.
