Epidemiological Profile of Gastric Adenocarcinoma in Lauro Wanderley University Hospital
Abstract
SUMMARY Objectives: To trace the epidemiological profile of the population affected with gastric adenocarcinoma (GAC) in the João Pessoa-PB University Hospital. Materials and Methods: Analysis of 398 lauds of histopathological examinations carried out on gastric tissue samples archived at the HULW Pathological Anatomy Service from January 2000 to December 2005. The identified neoplasms were grouped according to their histological type, age group and gender. Results: 75 (18.84%) were found results compatible with gastric cancer, of which 74 (98.66%) were diagnosed as adenocarcinomas and only 1 as a (1.34%) neuroendocrine tumor. Among the GAC, 31 (41.89%) belonged to the diffuse type (ACD) and 33 (44%) to the intestinal type (ACI), according to Lauren Classification. The proportion among men and women affected by GAC, in general, was 2:1 and the predominant age group was from 70 to 79 years old among the ACD. In the ACI the incidence remained elevated in a broader age group, which ranged from 50 to 79 years old. Conclusion: The studied population was considered as low risk for gastric neoplasm, as the various GAC subtypes presented themselves in similar proportions with a marking predominance in older men, therefore being in accordance with the available data in both national and international literature.
