Functional and Aesthetic Rehabilitation of Dental Erosion due to Bulimia

Abstract

SUMMARY Nervous anorexia and bulimia are food disorders which many times may be detected firstly by dentists through signs and symptoms which are present in the buccal space. Consequenlty, it is essential that dentists have basic necessary knowledge to perform a correct diagnosis and to guide patients to multidisciplinary treatment, involving dentistry, psychology, medicine and psychiatry among other branches of knowledge. Nervous anorexia is mainly characterized by the image disorder that patients have concerning themselves, considering themselves obese, even when they are below average weight in function of age and height. Nervous bulimia is characterized by compulsive ingestion of great quantities of food in a short period of time, followed by compensating actions to avoid weight gain. On the other hand, self-induced vomit is a conduct performed by individuals who have food disorders to lose or to avoid weight gain, producing chronic regurgitations, and the acid content of the stomach, present in the buccal space, causes degradation of dental structures. Therefore, this study aimed at discussing the main aspects related to food disorders and oral changes through the case report of a patient with nervous a diagnosis of bulimia.
