Cognitive Profile of Adolescents with Hyperthyroidism in Salvador – Bahia – Brazil
Abstract
SUMMARY Objective: To describe the cognitive profile of adolescents with hyperthyroidism. Material and methods: Descriptive study of series of cases. The investigated population was submitted to clinical and laboratorial evaluation and psychometric testing. Results: The average Intelligence Quotient (IQ) score was 65.22, the Verbal IQ was 68.66 and Execution IQ was 68.44. Seven individuals had behavior compatible with specific neuropsychological disorders. Conclusion: The data found points out the impact of the hyperthyroidism on the cognitive development and reinforces the importance of neuropsychological and biochemistry investigation for hyperthyroidism in all adolescents with school difficulties, AD/HD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder), and/or irritability, even in the absence of other clinical manifestations.
