The aim of this article is to guide the surgeon-dentists, specifically the clinicians, about the diagnosis, the prevention and the treatment of dental erosion through the proposal of a guideline. A bibliographic survey was conducted through electronic search in texts published between 1998 and 2008, from databases LILACS and MEDLINE. From the findings, it is suggested a dietary analysis, dietary counseling, the change of harmful habits and proper oral hygiene for prevention and control of erosion, in addition to restorative treatment. All this should be coupled with regular monitoring and control of the patient, aiming to promote their health. DESCRIPTORS: Dental erosion, aetiology, management.
