Abstract

SUMMARY Objective: This treatise aims to evaluate the improvement in the glycemic control of the Diabetes Mellitus, as well as the control of the Periodontal Disease through the relationship among the blood levels of the glycated hemoglobin, both fasting and postload glycemias, and the clinical parameters of the periodontal disease. Materials and Methods: One selected twenty patients who were not submitted to the conventional periodontal treatment. Such patients were under the age of 18 to 70 years old, divided into two groups: 1- conventional periodontal treatment + mechanical control; 2- conventional periodontal treatment + mechanical control + maintenance therapy. The analysis were effectuated in 90 days, including plaque index, gingival index, probing depth, level of clinical attachment and bleeding on probing, together with the evaluation of the glycated hemoglobin and both fasting and postload glycemias. Results: One came to understand an improvement in most of the clinical periodontal parameters, as well as the levels of both fasting and postload glycemias in both groups. In the group who received the maintenance therapy, one perceived that the bleeding on probing and the probing depth diminished in a great scale. In addition, the value of the glycated hemoglobin diminished, however not sufficiently. Conclusion: One suggested that the therapy herein mentioned has been positive in patients with diabetes mellitus and periodontal disease. DESCRIPTORS Glycemia. Diabetes Mellitus. Periodontitis. Glycated Hemoglobin A.
