IMMEDIATE EFFECT OF THE SPEECH-LANGUAGE THERAPY USE OF RESPIRATORY DEVICE ON THE DISPLACEMENT OF HYOID BONE: A PILOT STUDY
Abstract
Objective: To verify the immediate effect of respiratory muscle training with different devices on the temporal measures of hyoid bone displacement during swallowing. Materials and methods: Pilot phase of a non-randomized parallel clinical trial with a sample of 10 individuals without complaint of swallowing, aged between 21 and 65 years (mean 37.3 ± 12.33 years), 09 women and 01 men, selected by convenience and allocated by simple draw in one of two intervention groups for respiratory muscle training associated with Shaker® (G1) or inverted Respiron® (G2) devices. Each group performed five sets of five deep and quick exhales. Ultrasound video capture was performed before and immediately after respiratory muscle training during the swallowing of thin liquid and honey thickened consistency, in a volume of 10 mL. The videos were decomposed at a rate of 30 frames per second and analyzed using ImageJ software, considering four hyoid displacement events: elevation, anteriorization, maintenance of anteriorization and return to rest. The analysis was descriptive, considering absolute and percentage evaluation of each measure before and after training. Results: In the thin liquid consistency, the temporal measurements showed a pattern of increase in G1 and reduction in G2. In honey thickened consistency, G1 showed a reduction pattern and G2 showed heterogeneous behavior. Conclusion: There are immediate effects on the temporal measures of hyoid displacement during swallowing after speech-language therapy use of respiratory devices. The immediate effects are different according to the device and the food consistency. DESCRIPTORS: Deglutition. Deglutition Disorders. Ultrasonography. Hyoid Bone. Breathing Exercises.Downloads
