Abstract

Objective: To associate the daily fruit consumption with anthropometric and biochemical profile of adults and elderly quilombolas of the state of Goiás, Brazil. Methodology: A cross-sectional study with 184 quilombolas over 20 years old. Demographic, frequency of fruit consumption, anthropometric, lipid profile and fasting glucose data were collected. Means between groups were compared according to fruit consumption and association between variables was performed by logistic regression. Results: The main inadequacies identified were waist-to-height ratio (67,9%) and hypercholesterolemia (47.8%). Daily fruit consumption was observed in 36.4% of the participants. The group with no daily fruit consumption had higher fasting glucose mean (p = 0.047) and higher prevalence of hyperglycemia (p = 0.022) when compared to the daily fruit intake group. Moreover, adults and elderly quilombolas without daily fruit consumption were 2.9 times more likely to present hyperglycemia when compared to the daily fruit consumption group (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Daily fruit intake should be encouraged among the quilombola population assessed for the prevention of the development of diseases related to hyperglycemia.
