CORRELATIONAL ANALYSIS OF THE FUNCTIONAL AND MUSCULAR PERFORMANCE OF THE SHOULDER OF WHEELCHAIR AND REGULAR BASKETBALL ATHLETES

Abstract

Objective: To analyze wheelchair basketball athletes’ functional and muscular performance of the glenohumeral joint and compare it with regular basketball athletes. Methodology: Eight wheelchair basketball athletes and eight regular basketball athletes were part of the sample. For functional analysis, the tests performed were the maximal pass and the medicine ball throw. Afterwards, the evaluation of the muscular performance of the shoulders’ external and internal rotator muscles was performed, using an isokinetic dynamometer, in the concentric-concentric mode at angular velocities of 60º/s., 180º/s. and 240º/s. The paired t test was used for the comparison between the limbs and the unpaired t test for the comparison between the groups. Spearman's correlation test was used to verify the correlations between functional and muscle variables. The significance level of p<0.05 was considered. Results: There were no statistically significant differences between groups, both in functional and muscle variables; as well as there were no differences between the members in the analysis of muscular performance. However, strong and significant correlations were found between the medicine ball throw and mean values of peak torque of the shoulders’ external and internal rotators (p<0.05). Conclusions: The strong correlations between the medicine ball throw test and the mean values of the peak torque suggest that this functional test is a useful tool and can be considered for assessing muscle performance when it is not possible to use isokinetic dynamometer.
