Abstract

Currently, many studies have shown that depression is a disease that affects thousands of people each year. Evidence indicates that oral health is directly linked to this disease, since in the oral cavity can be found several microorganisms, which lead to periodontal disease. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of sertraline on the alveolar bone tissue of rats with ligature induced periodontitis. Forty adult male rats were used, divided into 4 groups, control group (CG), group with periodontal disease (GPD), sertraline group (SG) and sertraline group with periodontal disease (SGPD). Groups with periodontal disease received a ligature around the 1st molars to promote the development of experimentally induced periodontitis. The animals in the sertraline groups received 5 mg / kg body weight of sertraline orally on alternate days. While the other groups received 1mL / Kg of weight of 0.9% saline in the same period. After the 30 day experimental period, the animals were euthanized and the hemi-mandibles were collected for histomorphological and radiographic analysis. The results showed similar food consumption and animal weight between the groups (p>0,l05). In the radiographic and histological analyzes, the GC and GS groups were statistically similar to each other (p>0,05), however, they presented a significant lower alveolar bone loss in relation to the GPD and GPDS groups (p<0,05). Thus, it can be concluded that sertraline did not act on the mechanism of alveolar bone remodeling in animals with experimentally induced periodontitis.
