Abstract

This study aimed to describe the understanding of parents about the feeding of autistic children, analyze the strategies adopted for conducting meals and contribute to discussions that may consider the subjectivity implicit in the feeding of these children.  Qualitative research with semi-structured interviews with 12 parents of autistic children was carried out. The results showed that unexpected acceptances and rejection permeate the feeding of these children and that, even in the face of difficulties, parents offer the rejected foods, diversifying ways of preparation and alternating the offer between the favorite and the rejected foods. The restricted eating repertoire of autistic children is a concern of the parents, causing them to seek strategies to stimulate acceptance and improve nutritional supply, which is no different from parents of non-autistic children. They state that food at home is an important issue in the daily care of children, with many tensions, but, also with opportunities for experimentation and different ways of preparation and ingredients/recipes and indicate the need for assistance in conducting the food of the children autistic.
