Abstract

Introduction: Cachexia and dynapenia may be present in cancer patients, related to lower quality of life and worse prognosis of the disease. Objective: To determine the prevalence of cachexia, dynapenia and associated factors in cancer patients. Methods: Cross-sectional observational study with a sample obtained by convenience, consisting of cancer patients under current antineoplastic treatment, age ≥ 20 years, both genders. Sex, age, type of treatment, weight, height and subjective global assessment were evaluated. Cachexia was defined as unintentional weight loss > 5% in the last 6 months or Body Mass Index <20 kg/m² with weight loss >2% and/or weight loss >2% associated with sarcopenia. Dynapenia was evaluated by the handgrip strength test, the cutoff point being <27KgF (men) and <16KgF (women). Results: Of the 57 patients, 56.1% were male and 57.9% adults. The highest prevalences of cachexia were observed in patients with cancer of the gastrointestinal tract (72.7%), male (50.0%) and lung (50.0%) (p=0.031), as well as in severely malnourished patients (p≤ 0.001). Dynapenia was significantly associated with moderate and severe malnutrition (p=0.035). Conclusion: There was a higher prevalence of cachexia and dynapenia in elderly males, with cancer of the gastrointestinal tract and severely malnourished.
