Abstract

Objectives: The objectives of this study are to identify cases of intoxication treated by exogenous Toxicology Centre of Paraiba (CEATOX) of Joao Pessoa, culminating in hospital in intensive care units (ICU) of hospitals in the Paraíba. Methods: This study is a descriptive retrospective, which reviewed the toxicology of CEATOX for the group of exogenous poisoning that resulted in ICU admissions from January 1 to December 31, 2007. The study followed the ethical observances of Resolution 196/96 of the National Health Council, and the data collection was performed in August 2008. For the analysis of the database were constructed, descriptively, tables and charts with the help of the features of Microsoft Excel 2007. Results: The records of poisoning showed that there was a predominance of females: 56.3%, over males: 43.6%. Most cases were caused by poisoning with carbamate (26.6%), followed by coumarin rodenticides (23.4%) and pyrethroids (22.3%). Of the total, 69% were cured, not 23.5% had confirmed healing and 7.5% of them die. Conclusion: The exogenic poisoning in 2007 shows that the products that caused ICU admissions were those used illegally as rodenticides, noting also that the drugs and insecticides had its share of cases.
