Abstract

Objective: To assess the magnitude in which myths on high blood pressure are still perpetuated among physical education professionals. Material and methods: In a descriptive field research, 45 professionals completed a questionnaire containing socioeconomic, demographic, and professional aspects as well as issues related to five myths on hypertension. Results: From the five myths investigated, subjects reported believing in three of them. There were no associations between concordance of myths with demographic, socioeconomic or professional indicators. Conclusion: Even with advancing scientific knowledge in physical education, myths related to hypertension are still perpetuated among professionals, suggesting a longer time to reach a level of science. DESCRIPTORS Mythology. Hypertension. Exercise. Epistemology. Physical Education and Training.
