FROM COMPETITION TO COLLABORATION BETWEEN USA AND USSR DURING COLD WAR

Abstract

This paper analyzes the relationship between the superpowers, the United States and the Soviet Union, regarding to the exploration of outer space, in light of the Cold War context. This relationship was featured by moments of competition, notably in the principle, as it was referred as “space race”, but it was also marked by moments of cooperation, during the détente, in which the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project (ASTP) took place. The analysis is also made under the theory point-of-view on international cooperation and politics. The founding is the neoliberalists’ thoughts, the 1972 US-USSR Agreement that led to the creation of the ASTP, besides the historical registries of the Cold War and space race.
