O IMPÉRIO DO DINHEIRO E A CONDIÇÃO DA MULHER NOS CONTOS DE MARGARIDA SABÓIA DE CARVALHO

Abstract

Margarida Sabóia de Carvalho (1905-1975) was an important journalist and female fiction writer from Ceará who published A Vida em contos (1964), whose recurring theme is that of human relations based on economic relationships. The setting is the city of Fortaleza in the 20th century, showing the perspective of various female characters, from different social classes. In her short stories, she represents the gears of gender inequalities, resulting from male domination, rooted in social structures and cultural norms automatically reproduced, causing even more rigid prejudices that the book reflects. The scenarios contrast socially and economically by showing the “poor” and “rich” neighborhoods. We aim to present and analyze the narratives of the aforementioned book. To support the study of the author's short stories, we consulted Azevedo (1976), Cortázar (2006), Gotlib (2006), and Montenegro (1965); to discuss gender violence, we are based on Osterne (2011) and Saffioti (2004); regarding male domination, in Boudieu (1999); and towards reflection on the “mercantile vision”, in Fromm (1978). We conclude that Margarida Sabóia de Carvalho, silenced and repudiated at various moments in her career as a female and feminist intellectual, does justice to her presence in this dossier, deserving to be better known and studied.
