Abstract

Andrew Lang, in his Red Fairy Book (1890), brought to his readers 'The Story of Sigurd', in a version which, according to him, was condensed from the translation of the Volsunga Saga, made by William Morris in 1870. However, in order to include it in a collection of fairy-stories aimed at children, Lang's tale required erasures, transformations and rewritings deeper than a mere "condensation". This work presents, initially, a brief overview of the literary context in which 'The Story of Sigurd' is placed. After that, the original story is presented, followed by a translation into Portuguese. In the final commentary, we present some noteworthy aspects on the transposition Lang undertook to transform the epic text of the Volsunga Saga into 'The Story of Sigurd', such as the effacement of characters and the inclusion of elements typical of fairy-stories.
