Abstract

The Song of Oleg the Prescient is one of the most famous poems of Aleksandr S. Pushkin (1799-1837), the quintessential Russian national poet who is classified as belonging to the Russian Romanticism. In 1822 he wrote the Song as part of a series of ballads of historical subject devoted to the rulers of first East Slavic state, the Kievan Rus᾿ (9th-10th c.): the princes belonging to the riurikid dinasty, of Scandinavian origin. In the Song he develops the motive of prince Oleg᾿s death, a legend that was gathered already by the Primary Chronicle (12th c.), and that would have its origin in the oral folklore, either of Scandinavian or oriental origin.
