Snorri’s Edda is an invaluable book about scaldic art. It summarizes everything one has to know in order to understand, and perhaps enjoy, the compositions of the scalds, unintelligible, as they usually are, for not initiated readers. I offer here a translation of its third and last section, the Háttatal, which is seldom included in editions. It is here that Snorri deals with metrical structure and all the complex rules that stanzas in this genre must comply with. He achieves this laborious task by discussing in detail the ample repertory of different stanzas, 102 in number, of a poem he once composed in honour of two Norwegian chieftains. This List of verse-forms is thus a scholarly treatise full of technical terms related to a form of poetry that Icelanders kept alive until the 14th century.
