This paper aims to present the socio-economic characteristics of the self-employed workers of the ciry of Salvador, bahia, and makes a comparative analysis between the self-employed workers who contribute and who don’t to the social welfare and self-employed who works for families and works for companies. To accomplish this purpose, it has been used data from Research of Employment and Unemployment of the Metropolitan Area of Salvador, related to 2005 and 2006, when the information have been filtered. The main results are, on one hand, the existence of a positive impact of the schooling on self-employed income, and, on the other hand, it has been noticed that the average of the incomes is higher for the self-employed workers who contribute to the social welfare compared to those who don’t.
