JOB SEARCH IN CONSTRUCTION: THE CENTRALITY OF SOCIAL NETWORKS

Abstract

This article aims to analyze the job search strategies used by unstable workers, the mechanisms employed, the type of social networks and how the social networks helps to (re)integrate them into the labor market. The methodology includes a qualitative study with twenty civil building laborers of São Carlos-SP, Brazil. We studied their occupational trajectories and social networks looking for identify their job search strategies and check how they had access to occupational opportunities. The literature reviews had shown the central role of social support networks in times of unemployment and job search. The qualitative analysis pointed the centrality of informal social networks, since the majority identified personal contacts as crucial in getting the job and getting the inside information. The role of family and friends has been important, for help them to get a job opportunity or to get a direct offer of employment.
