THE CAMPAIGN TO UNIONISE A FAST-FOOD COMPANY IN NEW ZEALAND

Abstract

This article seeks to analyze the campaign by the New Zealand trade union Unite, to unionise the fast-food company Restaurant Brands, owner of the country’s KFC, Pizza Hut and Starbucks stores. The study undertakes an analysis of media coverage of the campaign, union publications, company data, and interviews with a Unite official. Unite was able to unionize a marginalized group of workers, and create public support for fast-food employees using the profile of wellknown brands to attract attention in the press against the employment practices of fast-food companies, and pressure the government to increase legal labor minimums that define labor conditions in the sector.
