Abstract

This article analyses conflicts and cooperative actions of two social movements in Campinas: the Metal Workers Union during the massive dismissals, between 1990 and 2002, and the Unemployed Movement, between 1997 and 1998. The purpose is to highlight contradictions between practice and speech of the Union. This issue will be analyzing from data of newspapers and interviews with activists The theoretical goal of this paper is to presenting an interpretation about the relationships between unionism, dismissals and unemployed. Considering political, economical, ideological and institutional aspects, the paper analyses the conflicts of interests and the possibilities of united actions among those groups.
