Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of alcohol consumption on labor market outcomes in Brazil using data from the National Health Survey. The methods employed involved the use of Mincer’s and quantile regressions. The results pointed out a wage bonus for alcohol consumers, being higher for individuals located in the highest income distribution range, when compared with those in the lowest income group. However, when investigating impacts associated with excessive alcohol consumption on wages, the relationship is reversed, with a wage penalty being observed. The implications of these results for the labor market are discussed throughout the paper.
