Abstract

We study the polarization of employment in the Brazilian labor market due to the advances in digital technologies. The methodology adopted is the Routine Task Intensity Index (RTI) proposed by Autor and Dorn (2013). The RTI was applied to the Manufacturing industry, using 2003, 2013, and 2018 Annual List of Social Information (RAIS) microdata. We also investigate the variables that influence the probability of performing routine, manual, or abstract tasks using a multinomial logit model. Results show that most occupational groups, in all years, have negative RTI values, indicating that jobs are polarized. However, there is no substantial change in RTI values between 2003 and 2018. The multinomial logit estimates show that the chances of performing abstract tasks increase when the worker has higher education, accumulates more professional experience, and works in medium-sized companies.
