Abstract

This article aims to investigate whether women are more likely to work in the Brazilian informal sector. The study provides a descriptive analysis for the years 2012 to 2019 and ends with the estimation of the Probit model, based on microdata from the Continuous National Household Sample Survey (PNADC) for 2019. The main results show that women are more likely of not having a formal contract and not being a social security contributor. Although similar the total proportion of informal workers of both sexes in the observed period, their participation exceeds that of men in categories associated with lower wages and more precarious working conditions.
