Abstract

Work and its social ramifications have permeated human life since ancient times. Today, work is so important not only because of the social role it plays, but mainly because of the dynamics of economic development associated with it. Regarding the labor market and its transformations, as well as the evolution in the quality of health care, education, occupations, and remuneration offered to the worker, it is configured as an important object of study. However, we see that the subject is still little explored in the rural environment; and, in this sense, the present work proposes to investigate through a literature review the relationship between Brazilian rural formal/informal work and the main mechanisms that integrate well-being, development, and freedom, taking as a guide the three basic dimensions of the Human Development Index (HDI) and analyzing the effectiveness of these instruments in Brazil. The results show that the country is still far from meeting the real needs of the Brazilian rural society, and that it will be necessary to invest more in research, data formulation, and reevaluation of the current policies implemented in the Brazilian rural environment.
