PREVALENCE OF RISK FACTORS AND COMPLICATIONS OF TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS IN USERS OF A FAMILY HEALTH UNIT
Abstract
Objectives: This study aims to describe the prevalence of risk factors and complications of type 2 diabetes in users accompanied by a Family Health Unit. Material and Methods: Were interviewed 70 users diagnosed with type 2 diabetes enrolled by three family health teams in the city of João Pessoa - PB. Results: There was predominance of female gender with mean of 59 years of age. Regarding risk factors, 42.9% had family history of diabetes, 14.3% were smokers, 41.4% were former smokers, and the majority (71.4%) was sedentary. Hypertension prevalence was 77.1% and the most prevalent complications were Peripheral Vascular Disease (37.1%), Diabetic Retinopathy (30.0%) and Ischemic Heart Disease (17.1%). Drug treatment predominated (95.7%) and a large number of participants were under diet (74.3%). Conclusion: The high prevalence of risk factors and complications found suggest a need for preventive interventions that encourage physical activity and body weight reduction, as well as glycemic control to minimize complications and their impact on quality of life of individuals.
