Abstract

Objective: To discuss inherent and fundamental conceptions of the Distance Education (DE), focusing on its power to decentralize the flow of information and highlighting the autonomy and accountability of learners in managing study and research. Methodology: This study is critical in nature and fosters a reflection based on readings and experiences with formative processes of Brazilian Health System managers and workers in Paraíba, on the learning process through DE. Results: Some potentialities of different modalities in consolidation are presented; it is pointed out that DE is an alternative included in the educational system, being strengthened when there is possibility to set face-to-face meetings between students and professors. Conclusion: We concluded that by being increasingly supported by information technologies and communication, DE demands educators qualified in new educational methodologies that could encourage the construction of learning communities. Thus, DE has been constituted as an important educational tool for formative processes in the Brazilian Health System. DESCRIPTORS: Distance Education. Unified Health System. Health Management.
