Representation of Body Image in Mastectomized Women: A Case Study
Abstract
Objective: This study proposed to describe and examine the representation of the body image in mastectomized women. Methods: This is a descriptive and cross-sectional study whose population sample was composed of twenty women with age between thirty and sixty years, participating of the group to support women with breast cancer “Amigos do Peito”. This research was conducted through interview, application of questionnaires and the Range of Measure Body Image by Souto (1999) for diagnosis of changes in the Body Image. Results: In a general way, we observed that the majority of women had an unfavorable body image and less than half had a favorable image. Conclusion: The type of surgery, marital status and age group were the variables most influenced by an unfavorable Body Image, while variables like type of therapy and surgery of reconstruction had no influence on the representation of the body image.
