Abstract

Objective: To evaluate whether the intake of red wine enhances post-exercise hypotension (PEH). Material and Methods: fifteen hypertensive individuals performed washout for 24 hours from polyphenols and red wine before four sessions: two with physical exercise and intake of red wine (EW) or placebo (EP); only exercise (Ex), and control session (Ctrl) without exercise or intake of red wine/placebo. The exercises lasted 60 minutes, with intensity between 60 to 80% of maximum heart rate. Blood pressure was measured in rest and for 60 minutes post-exercise, every 10 minutes. Red wine (Marcus Jaimes®, Bento Gonçalves, RS, Brazil) was ingested (100ml) 30 minutes before exercise. One-way, two-way and repeated measures ANOVA were used for the statistical analysis. Results: the sessions promoted systolic PEH. In EW, this reduction in blood pressure was descriptively higher from 30 to 60 minutes of recovery, but with no significant differences compared to the other sessions. Diastolic PEH occurred only after 30, 40 and 60 minutes in EW, while it was constant in the Ex session. No significant difference was found for diastolic PEH between sessions. Conclusion: The intake a single dose of red wine before one session of exercise promotes mild but non-significant potentiation of PEH. DESCRIPTORS Wine. Post-Exercise Hypotension. Hypertension.
