USE OF HERBAL MEDICINES ASSOCIATED WITH DENTAL PROSTHESIS
Abstract
Objective: Conduct a review of research that used herbal substances against microorganisms of the oral cavity and the surface of dental prostheses and verify if the effectiveness of these herbal medicines have been studied. Material and Methods: The survey was conducted in the databases: BBO, BIREME, LILACS, Portal of periodicals CAPES, PUBMED, SCIELO and Academic Google. Results: Herbal when associated with dentures, mostly, they were studied for their antifungal activity in vitro of C. albicans strains in the treatment of denture stomatitis. Conclusion: Herbal frequently used in these studies were Uncaria tomentosa L., Ricinus communis and propolis, with the last of these, when in gel form, showed conflicting results, while Ricinus communis, in its dentifrice presentation didn’t showed antimicrobial effect against E. coli, C. albicans and C. glabrata. Therefore, the effectiveness of several herbal medicines should be better studied to obtain the expected results when associated with dentures.
