Abstract

Introduction: Stroke is the largest cause of physical and cognitive disability in adults. Objective: To evaluate the effect of training of resisted exercises among chronic hemiparetic individuals. Material and Methods: This was a quasi-experimental study. Seven volunteers performed a protocol of resisted exercises, with isometric, concentric and eccentric isotonic actions of the musculature of upper limbs, trunk and lower limbs, using bodybuilding equipment and shin guards. The protocol was performed forsix weeks, twice a week, with 40-minute visits. During the visits, participants were supervised by qualified physiotherapists. The variables analyzed were, as follows: muscle torque, which was evaluated by the Biodex System 3 isokinetic dynamometer; and balance, evaluated based on the Berg balance scale. Student's t test was used to compare pre- and post-training outcomes, with ap≤0.05 significance level. Results: After the protocol was utilized, there was an increase in the Berg balance scale scoresas well as anincrease of the extensor and flexor muscle torque of the knee at a rate of 60 degrees / second. No significant differences were found for extensor and flexor knee torque at the rate of 180 degrees / second. Conclusion: The resisted exercises were beneficial in improving the balance and increasing the muscular strength of the patients.
