Abstract

SUMMARY Objective: To analyse the negative and/or positive influences of TV commercials on general habits, and on habits of oral hygiene. Material and Methods: Related aspects were verified, including: oral hygiene, dietetic habits and child or adult focus. For this study six TV channels were selected: Rede Globo, SBT, TVE, Cartoon, Discovery Kids and Fox Kids, and analysed during five working days, between 8:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. and between 2:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., and later the data were recorded on specific forms, observing the beginning and duration of each event. Results: By observing the obtained data, it was concluded that the substances which produce cavities are mentioned three times more frequently than the entries concerning oral and/or general health. Conclusion: The approach to education about food intake on the part of children is constantly motivated in relation to the consumption of food which causes tooth decay and cavities.
