Clinical evaluation of obliterative desensitizers after periodontal scaling
Abstract
SUMMARY Objective: This work aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of two desensitizing agents of obliterative action of dentine tubules. Material and Methods: 48 teeth with dentine sensitivity after periodontal therapy were divided into two groups. The teeth of group I received Oxagel (Potassium oxalate) and the teeth of group II received Gluma Desensitizer (Glutaraldehyde with Hema). On the first session, painful sensitivity was measured, using tactile, thermal and evaporative stimuli. After we determined the degrees of initial hypersensitivity, the application of the desensitizer was followed during four weeks and each 7 days, new measurements of the sensitivity degrees were done and the dental elements reevaluated 60 days later. Results: The data showed that the reduction between the initial and final evaluations was higher than 81% in both groups. Conclusion: Both tested substances were efficient in reducing dentine hypersensitivity after periodontal therapy, and Gluma stood out for being more effective on the elimination of sensitivity when compared to evaporative and thermal stimuli.
