Abstract

ABSTRACT A revision is made of the concepts of overwhelming pneumonias, with a brief speculation about its origins. The main etiological agents are discussed, and special attention given to certain clinical and radiological characteristics. The importance of etiological diagnosis is emphasized, as well as that of the therapeutical conduct, since the possibilities of etiologies, even of the community acquired ones, have clearly changed in the last two decades. The mechanisms of the progression of overwhelming pneumonias to more severe forms and to death is still unknown.
