Analysis of the Dentistry Curriculum Reform in the State of Rio de Janeiro
Abstract
SUMMARY Objectives: This study presents the current situation of professional formation in the undergraduate courses in Dentistry, based on both faculty and students’ perceptions. Materials and Methods: This study had an exploratory character of descriptive nature, based on a quali-quantitative approach. One hundred sixty-two (162) undergraduate students and 23 professors in Dentistry from private and state institutions in the state of Rio de Janeiro participated in this research. Results: Results point out a collective perception for the need of re-evaluation of the curriculum structure as well as of the teaching-learning process, as a way to form competent professionals to work in convergence with the new job market. Conclusions: In the context of the observed institutions, the study shows that there is already a certain movement towards change when it comes to dental practice, even if incipient.
