Evaluation of Gravity Levels of Traffic Accidents in the State of Piauí
Abstract
SUMMARY The objective of this work is to identify the main kind of traffic accidents in the State of Piauí, as well as define the seriousness of these accidents in the year of 2005. In this research, we applied a quantitative analysis to the available data, which were classified and analyzed through statistical methods. A needs assessment was performed in Piauí; a list of the existing injuries and/or death was obtained, as well as the number of people involved in each accident. A 30-day follow-up for non-fatal victims was performed after the date of the accident, to register any case of later death. In order to collect the data, in relation to the patients that were hospitalized, we performed an analysis of the medical records of patients who were in Getúlio Vargas Hospital (HGV), the reference hospital in receiving victims of traffic accident in Teresina. In the case of drivers who were involved in traffic accidents without victims, who did not have to go to the hospital, the database from the Federal Traffic Police and the Traffic Police (BPTRAN-PI) and the City Transportation Authority (Strans) were used as the main sources. The results showed that, in 2005, the number of non-fatal victims (3,021) was larger than the fatal ones (400). The kind of accident that resulted in a bigger number of victims was “collision” (73% of the total traffic accidents). The main traffic accident victims were motorcycle drivers (132 deaths representing 32.92% of total deaths). DESCRIPTORS Traffic accidents. Injury Severity Score. Mortality.Downloads
