Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the in vivo effect of the hydroalcoholic Cisampelos sympodialis in osteoarthritis induced in the right knees of male and female rats. The hydroalcoholic extract was obtained from leaf Cisampelos sympodialis. Material Methods: Sixty-four rats were divided into 08 groups, each containing 04 males and 04 females. Osteoarthritis was induced by application of Freud’s Complete Adjuvant in the right knee of mice of groups 1-7. There was no induction of osteoarthritis in group 8. From the sixteenth day after induction, the animals in group 1, 2 and 3 received 30 days, orally, once daily, 12.5 mg / kg, 25.0 mg / kg and 50.0 mg / kg, respectively, of the hydroalcoholic Cisampelos sympodialis for 30 days. Animals in groups 4, 5 and 6 received 1.2 mg / kg, 2.5 mg / kg and 5.0 mg / kg of hydroalcoholic Cisampelos sympodialis, intra articular knee right at 8, 15 and 22 days after induction of osteoarthritis. The animals in group 7 and 8 received 03 injections with 0.9% NaCl, also at 8, 15 and 22 days after induction. Results: This study demonstrated that there was no statistically significant difference between grades and stages of the degenerative cartilage in the knees of mice that made use of hydroalcoholic Cisampelos sympodialis, post induction of osteoarthritis, when compared with the cartilage of the knees of rats control group. Conclusion: The hydroalcoholic extract of Cisampelos sympodialis not cause regeneration of articular cartilage of the knees of rats subjected to chemical degeneration.
