KNOWLEDGE DEGREE OF UNDERGRADUATES IN DENTISTRY ABOUT PARENTERAL DRUG ADMINISTRATION IN MEDICAL EMERGENCIES

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to assess the level of knowledge of dental students at the Federal University of Campina Grande about parenteral drug administration in emergency situations that may occur in a dental clinic. METHODOLOGY: This is a cross-sectional, observational, quantitative, descriptive and analytical study to assess students' knowledge between the 6th and 10th periods, totaling 132 participants. The study was carried out from July 2019 to July 2020, having as inclusion criteria all students regularly enrolled between the 6th and 10th period of the course, excluding those who did not answer the instrument in its entirety. The data were tabulated in Microsoft Excel and then descriptive statistics were performed using the SPSS software version 24.0. RESULTS: As far as theoretical knowledge is concerned, most students have demonstrated a certain mastery, however, the questions that cover their level of safety when intervening in a medical-emergency situation, the answers are disappointing. Most participants responded that they did not feel safe in administering a drug intravenously (87.9%), nor did they feel safe in performing serum drip calculations (91.7%). And when asked about believing that they have sufficient knowledge about medical emergencies, most answered that they did not (97.7%). CONCLUSION: Therefore, graduates are unable to intervene in a medical emergency in a dental clinic. Further reinforcing the need to expand the number of colleges to include the discipline of medical emergencies in the curricula and internships in large hospital centers.
