Abstract

Objectives: Oxidative stress has been studied as a risk and prognostic factor in breast cancer. In addition to oxidative markers, antioxidants have their importance highlighted in the literature as protectors in the development of malignant tumors and in the management of the disease. The objective of the study was to evaluate oxidative imbalance and obesity at diagnosis in women with breast cancer and its association with recurrence / death. Methodology: Longitudinal study with a 5-year follow-up conducted with 114 women with breast cancer evaluated at the time of diagnosis (T0) where socioeconomic, anthropometric data (weight, height and waist circumference), oxidative biomarkers (TBARs, LDL-, AntiLDL- and 8-OHdG) and antioxidants (retinol, α-tocopherol, β-carotene, EPA, DHA, linolenic and linoleic); and 5 years later (T1) when the outcomes of: live without disease and relapse / death were investigated. Results: There was a greater oxidative imbalance at diagnosis in the group that relapsed / died. The increase in oxidative markers, such as 8-OHdG and TBARS, implied a reduction in the antioxidant compound β-carotene. WC showed a correlation with 8-OHdG in the group that relapsed / died. Conclusion: Oxidative imbalance and visceral obesity at diagnosis were associated with a higher risk of recurrence / death.
