Objective: o compare lung capacity and respiratory muscle strength in adolescents with different nutritional status and to correlate respiratory muscle strength with body composition and spirometry. Method: Cross-sectional study carried out with 73 adolescents, both sexes, allocated to four groups: eutrophic (EG, n = 21); overweight (GS, n = 15), obese (GO, n = 24) and severely obese (GOG, n = 13). All were drilled to anthropometric assessment, body composition, spirometry and manovacuometry. For breathing tests, the sitting position, nose clip and measurement of three measurements were standardized, with forced expiratory volume collected in the first second (FEV1), forced vital capacity (FVC), FEV1 / FVC, maximum inspiratory and expiratory pressure. Results: There was no difference between groups in terms of spirometric parameters or respiratory muscle strength (p> 0.05). All groups had higher than expected spirometric values, although only GS showed a statistically significant difference. As for respiratory muscle strength, values below the expected for age and sex were observed (p <0.05). There is a moderate correlation for respiratory muscle strength and the variables of body composition and spirometry (p <0.05). Conclusion: Pulmonary capacity was respiratory system; and body composition, FVC and direct FEV with similar respiratory muscle strength between groups, as well as respiratory muscle strength, thus, adiposity did not cause altered changes in the respiratory system; The variables of bioimpedance (body mass, BMI, MM and% BF) and spirometry (FVC and FEV1) similar to a direct relationship with respiratory muscle strength.Downloads
