COMPARISON OF PHYSICAL AND FUNCTIONAL CHARACTERISTICS OF BASKETBALL PRACTICING AND NON-SPORTING WHEELCHAIR USERS

Abstract

Introduction: Currently, 23.9% of the Brazilian population has some type of disability, and more than 13 million people have motor disabilities. And, admittedly, higher levels of physical fitness, help in the prevention of comorbidities, help in social interaction and in new perspectives of rehabilitation. Objective: To compare the physical and functional characteristics of wheelchair basketball players and non-sports wheelchair users. Methodology: This is a cross-sectional, analytical, quantitative study. The population consisted of wheelchair basketball players and non-sports wheelchair users. The handgrip strength (FPM) was assessed using a dynamometer and the aerobic capacity (VO2max) using the Franklin protocol. Results: 16 wheelchair users, 8 sportsmen and 8 non-sportsmen were evaluated, the median age was 43.0 (38.8-48.5) versus 33.5 (20.3-52.3) years (p = 0.328) . In relation to HGS, the median was 50.00 (40.5-54) Kgf in the athlete group and 40.5 (22.3-52.5) ​​Kgf in the non-sports group (p = 0.279). VO2max values ​​were found to be 28.6 (24.4-33.8) ml / kg / min in the athlete group and 6.4 (3.5-8.1) ml / kg / min in the non-athlete group. -sportsman (p <0.001). Conclusion: A significantly higher cardiorespiratory condition was identified in the sports group compared to the non-sports group, however, with no statistical difference in HGS.
